Biography

Chaim Soutine was born in Smilavichy, near Minsk, and arrived in Paris in 1913, where he became one of the key figures of the School of Paris alongside his friend Modigliani. His convulsive landscapes of Céret and Cagnes, his portraits of pastry cooks, bellboys and valets, and his raw still lifes of beef carcasses and fowl, painted with thick, agitated impasto, anticipated post-war gestural abstraction and influenced de Kooning. The American collector Albert Barnes bought dozens of his works in 1922, launching his career. Supply is limited and the market focuses on the 1920s figures and carcasses. His record, Le Bœuf (about 1923), sold for 28.2 million dollars at Christie's New York in May 2015.
