Hans Hofmann
1880-1966 · German-American · Abstract Expressionism
Biografia
Hans Hofmann (1880 to 1966) was a German-born American painter and the most influential teacher of the New York School. After working in Paris among the Fauves and Cubists, he ran a pioneering art school in Munich from 1915, then moved to the United States in 1932 and taught for decades in New York and Provincetown, shaping artists such as Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler and Joan Mitchell. His push and pull theory of colour and space anticipated action painting, and his late slab paintings of the 1950s and 1960s are his most sought works. For the market he is a core Abstract Expressionist name with a catalogue raisonné, and Lava reached 8.9 million dollars at Christie's in 2017.
