Biographie

Paul Cézanne, born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839, exhibited with the Impressionists before developing a structured, constructive way of painting that reduced nature to planes of colour. His still lifes of apples, his bathers, portraits of Madame Cézanne and repeated views of Mont Sainte-Victoire made him, in the words often attributed to Picasso and Matisse, the father of modern art, and a direct source for Cubism. For the market Cézanne is rarer than Monet or Renoir: major oils seldom come to auction, so each one draws strong competition. His public auction record is La Montagne Sainte-Victoire (1888-90), sold for about 137.8 million dollars in 2022, and The Card Players was reportedly sold privately for more than 250 million dollars.
