Biographie
Maurice de Vlaminck was a French painter, largely self-taught, who with André Derain formed the School of Chatou and became, at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, one of the most radical Fauves. His landscapes of the Seine, Chatou and the Paris suburbs, painted with pure colour squeezed from the tube, express a violent, instinctive temperament. After about 1908 he moved toward a darker, Cézanne-inspired manner and later produced many stormy landscapes and still lifes. The market is sharply split: the rare Fauve canvases of 1904 to 1907 command millions, while later works sell in the tens of thousands. His record, Paysage de banlieue (1905), sold for 22.5 million dollars at Christie's New York in May 2011.
