Biographie
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a co-founder in 1905 of Die Brücke in Dresden, the group that launched German Expressionism. His angular figures, acid colour and raw woodcuts captured bathers at the Moritzburg lakes, circus and cabaret life and, after his move to Berlin in 1911, the famous street scenes of cocottes and passers-by. Traumatised by military service, he settled near Davos in 1917, where he painted Alpine life. The Nazis branded his art degenerate and removed hundreds of works from German museums; he took his own life in 1938. Restitution claims shape parts of the market. His record, Berliner Straßenszene (1913), sold for 38.1 million dollars at Christie's New York in November 2006 after its restitution.
