Biography

Wu Guanzhong was born in Jiangsu in 1919, studied in Hangzhou and then in Paris from 1947 to 1950 before returning to teach in Beijing. Through the political campaigns of the Mao era he kept painting landscapes, and from the late 1970s he became the leading voice for formal beauty and abstraction in Chinese art. His oils and ink works reduce the water towns of Jiangnan, mountains and trees to lines, dots and blocks of colour, a bridge between the Chinese literati tradition and Western modernism. He is a pillar of the mainland and Hong Kong markets: The Zhou Village sold for HK$236 million at Poly Auction Hong Kong in 2016, and his works are held by major public collections he endowed in Singapore and Hong Kong.
