Biography

Vincent van Gogh, born in Zundert in 1853, painted for barely a decade before his death at Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890, yet produced around 860 paintings and more than 1,000 drawings. His expressive colour and brushwork, developed in Paris, Arles and Saint-Rémy, became a foundation of modern art and of Expressionism. For the market his scarcity is decisive: most major canvases are in museums, above all the Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum, so top paintings appear at auction only a few times a decade and trigger intense global competition. His public record is Verger avec cyprès (1888), sold for about 117.2 million dollars in 2022, while works on paper and early Dutch pictures trade from about one to thirty million dollars.
