Biography

Umberto Boccioni was the leading painter and sculptor of Italian Futurism. Signatory of the 1910 manifestos and author of the 1912 Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture, he sought to render speed, dynamism and the energy of the modern city in works such as The City Rises (1910) and States of Mind. His bronze Unique Forms of Continuity in Space (1913), which appears on the Italian 20 cent euro coin, is an icon of modern sculpture. He died in 1916 at 33 after a fall from a horse during military training, so his mature output is very small and mostly in museums. His record is a posthumous 1972 cast of Unique Forms, sold for 16.2 million dollars at Christie's New York in November 2019.
