Biography

Tamara de Lempicka was the emblematic portraitist of Art Deco. Born in Warsaw and settled in Paris after the Russian Revolution, she studied with André Lhote and developed a polished, sculptural style of soft Cubism applied to glamorous portraits and voluptuous nudes. Her paintings of the late 1920s and early 1930s, such as the Autoportrait in the Green Bugatti, defined the image of the modern woman. Her reputation faded after she moved to the United States in 1939 and revived from the 1970s, helped by celebrity collectors. Prime works from 1925 to 1933 are scarce. Her record, Portrait de Marjorie Ferry (1932), sold for 21.1 million dollars at Christie's London in February 2020.
