Rufino Tamayo
1899-1991 · Mexican · Mexican Modernism, Figurative abstraction
Biography
Rufino Tamayo (1899 to 1991) was a Mexican painter of Zapotec heritage from Oaxaca who offered a modern alternative to the political muralism of Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros. He fused pre-Columbian forms and Mexican popular colour with lessons from Cubism and Surrealism, painting figures, animals, watermelons and cosmic scenes in rich, textured colour. He lived for years in New York and Paris, built an international career, and founded the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City and the Museo Rufino Tamayo of pre-Hispanic art in Oaxaca. For the market he is a blue chip Latin American name: Trovador sold for 7.2 million dollars at Christie's in 2008, then a record for Latin American art.
