Biography

Robert Rauschenberg, born in Port Arthur, Texas, studied at Black Mountain College and became the bridge between Abstract Expressionism and Pop. His Combines of the 1950s, such as Bed and Monogram, mixed paint with found objects, while the silkscreen paintings of 1962 to 1964 layered news photographs, including images of John F. Kennedy, into dense collages of American life. In 1964 he was the first American to win the Grand Prize for painting at the Venice Biennale. His later output was enormous and uneven, which explains a wide price range. The market prizes Combines and early silkscreen paintings, as shown by the 88.8 million dollar Buffalo II, while later series and prints trade at far lower levels.
