Biography
Raoul Dufy was a French painter from Le Havre who joined the Fauves after seeing Matisse in 1905 and briefly explored Cézanne-inspired Cubism with Braque. From the 1920s he developed his signature style of rapid, calligraphic drawing over bright washes of colour, applied to regattas, racecourses, beaches, orchestras and the Riviera. He also worked in textile design, ceramics and decoration, notably the giant mural La Fée Électricité (1937). His market is wide and accessible, with many watercolours and gouaches, while early Fauve oils are rare and command the top prices. His record, La foire aux oignons (1907), sold for about 7.9 million dollars at Sotheby's London in 2007, and in May 2025 Régates à Cowes reached 1.06 million dollars.
