Biography

Piet Mondrian began as a landscape painter in the Netherlands, passed through Symbolism and Cubism in Paris, and by 1920 had reduced painting to black lines, white grounds and the three primary colours. With Theo van Doesburg he founded De Stijl in 1917, and his Neo-Plasticism shaped modern architecture, design and graphics. He left Paris for London in 1938 and New York in 1940, where the Boogie Woogie paintings closed his career. Classic grid paintings are few and many sit in museums, so each one at auction is a major event. Three have passed $47 million at auction, the record being $51 million in New York in 2022, while early landscapes trade far lower.
