Biography

Pierre Bonnard was a French painter and founding member of the Nabis, the group of young artists who, in the 1890s, drew on Gauguin and Japanese prints to create flat, decorative compositions. He later became one of the great colourists of the twentieth century, painting domestic interiors, gardens, Mediterranean views and his wife Marthe in the bath, often from memory, with shimmering, saturated colour. Long overshadowed by Matisse and Picasso, he has been reassessed by major museum exhibitions. His market rewards large, luminous landscapes and interiors from the 1910s to the 1940s. His auction record, La Terrasse ou Une terrasse à Grasse (1912), sold for 19.6 million dollars at Christie's New York in May 2019.
