Biography
Philip Guston, born Phillip Goldstein in Montreal in 1913 and raised in Los Angeles, began as a muralist, became a leading lyrical painter of the New York School in the 1950s, then shocked the art world in 1970 with cartoonish figurative paintings of hooded figures, shoes, cigarettes and studio clutter. That late work, once rejected, now shapes generations of painters and anchors his critical standing. For collectors there are two markets: shimmering abstractions of the 1950s and the late figurative canvases. His auction record is $25.9 million for To Fellini (1958) at Christie's New York in May 2013. Top works appear rarely, so supply rather than demand sets the pace of his market.
