Biography

Paul Gauguin left a career as a Paris stockbroker to paint, exhibiting with the Impressionists before developing a bolder style of flat colour, simplified forms and symbolic content in Brittany at Pont-Aven. In 1891 he moved to Tahiti and later to the Marquesas Islands, where he produced the paintings, woodcuts and carvings that made him a key figure for Matisse, Picasso and the Expressionists. For the market, Gauguin is rare and highly concentrated: major Tahitian canvases are mostly in museums, so few top works reach auction. When they do, prices are among the highest for any nineteenth century artist, with a public auction record of 105.7 million dollars set in 2022.
