Biography

Max Beckmann was one of the most powerful German painters of the twentieth century. Marked by his experience as a medical orderly in the First World War, he developed a hard-edged figurative style close to New Objectivity, then a dense, allegorical language of masks, myth and theatre, notably in his nine triptychs. Dismissed from his teaching post and labelled degenerate by the Nazis, he went into exile in Amsterdam in 1937 and emigrated to the United States in 1947. His self-portraits are central to his work and his market. His record, Hölle der Vögel (1938), sold for about 45.8 million dollars at Christie's London in 2017, and in 2022 Selbstbildnis gelb-rosa set the record for any work auctioned in Germany.
