Biography
Lucio Fontana, born in Rosario, Argentina, to Italian parents, founded Spatialism after publishing the White Manifesto in Buenos Aires in 1946 and returning to Milan in 1947. From 1949 he pierced canvases (Buchi) and from 1958 slashed them (Tagli), turning the picture plane into an opening onto real space. He also worked as a sculptor, ceramist and pioneer of neon environments. For the market Fontana is the anchor of post-war Italian art: his Concetti spaziali trade at every price level, from small Attese to the egg-shaped La fine di Dio canvases that reach eight figures. Deep supply, an active archive and steady demand from Europe, the US and Asia make him one of the most liquid names among the blue chips.
