Biography

Lucian Freud, grandson of Sigmund Freud, left Berlin for London with his family in 1933. After an early, precise and slightly surreal style, he moved in the late 1950s to a looser, heavily worked realism, painting friends, family, lovers and himself under unsparing light. His large nudes of the 1990s, such as the portraits of Sue Tilley and the performer Leigh Bowery, are among the most powerful figurative paintings of the late 20th century. Freud worked slowly and his output is limited, so major canvases are rare at auction. Large Interior, W11 (after Watteau) set his record at 86.3 million dollars in 2022, while etchings provide a much more accessible market.
