Biography

Keith Haring, from Kutztown, Pennsylvania, studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and became famous for the chalk drawings he made on empty advertising panels in the subway from 1980. His bold outlines, radiant babies, barking dogs and dancing figures carried messages on nuclear disarmament, apartheid, drugs and AIDS. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop to sell affordable merchandise, and he painted public murals worldwide before dying of AIDS-related illness at 31. His market is broad and international, with thousands of prints and multiples beside a limited number of large canvases and tarpaulins from 1982 to 1985. Top paintings sell in the 3 to 6 million dollar range.
