Biography
Kazimir Malevich was born in Kyiv to a Polish family and worked in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. After Cubo-Futurist experiments he launched Suprematism in 1915, showing the Black Square at the 0,10 exhibition in Petrograd, one of the founding moments of abstract art. He taught in Vitebsk and Leningrad, but Soviet policy pushed him back to figuration before his death in 1935. Almost all his major works are in Russian museums or the Stedelijk, so masterpieces almost never reach auction. When they do, as with Suprematist Composition at $85.8 million in 2018, prices are among the highest for any Modern artist. Authenticity disputes weigh on the lower end of the market.
