Biography

Juan Gris (1887-1927), born in Madrid and active in Paris from 1906, is regarded with Picasso and Braque as the third master of Cubism. Working in the Bateau-Lavoir circle, he brought a rigorous, almost mathematical structure and bright, lucid color to Synthetic Cubism, above all in the still lifes and papiers collés of 1913-1917. He died at 40, so his oeuvre is small, and the best works are largely in museums. That scarcity explains the gap in his market: the 1915 still life that set his $57.1 million record in 2014 stands far above the prices of $1-2 million that recent works have reached at the New York sales.
