Biography

Joan Mitchell, born in Chicago, was a central figure of the second generation of the New York School before moving to France in 1959, settling from 1968 in Vétheuil, near Monet's old house. Her large, often multi-panel canvases translate landscape, water, trees and remembered feelings into energetic, rhythmic brushwork and luminous colour. Long overshadowed by male peers, she has been reassessed since the 2020 to 2022 retrospective in San Francisco, Baltimore and Paris and the Monet-Mitchell show at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Her market is among the strongest for any woman artist, with a 29.16 million dollar record and frequent eight-figure results. Supply is relatively steady, and demand now comes from the US, Europe and Asia.
