Henry Moore
1898-1986 · British · Modernist sculpture
Biography
Henry Moore was the leading British sculptor of the twentieth century. Drawing on pre-Columbian, African and Cycladic art, he made the reclining figure, the mother and child and pierced, organic forms his lifelong themes, and his monumental bronzes stand in public spaces worldwide. His wartime Shelter Drawings also brought him wide recognition. Because bronzes were cast in editions and he was very prolific, the market is broad, from maquettes and drawings to large outdoor casts, with prices driven by scale, date and provenance. In March 2026 King and Queen (1952 to 1953), the last cast of the edition in private hands, sold for 26.3 million pounds, about 35.1 million dollars, at Christie's London, a new record for the artist.
