Biography

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) chronicled the nightlife of Montmartre, its cabarets, dance halls, brothels and performers, with a sharp graphic line and bold, flattened colour. Trained in Paris, he absorbed Degas and Japanese prints and became a master of the colour lithograph; his Moulin Rouge and Jane Avril posters helped invent the modern poster. He died at 36, leaving a compact painted oeuvre. For the market, major oils are scarce and command eight-figure prices, while posters and lithographs trade often and provide a liquid entry level. His auction record, La Blanchisseuse, sold for $22.4 million at Christie's New York in 2005, and top-quality paintings rarely appear, which keeps prices for the best works firm.
