Biography

Georgia O'Keeffe was a pioneer of American modernism. Promoted from 1916 by the photographer and dealer Alfred Stieglitz, whom she married, she became famous for magnified flowers, New York skyscrapers and, after settling in New Mexico, bleached bones, adobe architecture and desert landscapes. Her work balances abstraction and observation and helped define an independent American art. Supply of top paintings is limited because many are held by museums, including the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. In November 2014 Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 (1932) sold for 44.4 million dollars at Sotheby's New York, then the record for any woman artist, and in November 2025 a 1927 leaf painting brought 7.9 million dollars.
