Biography
Georges Seurat (1859-1891) founded Neo-Impressionism, replacing the spontaneous brushwork of Impressionism with a systematic technique of small, separate dots of pure colour based on contemporary optical theory. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, became a manifesto of modern painting and influenced Signac, Van Gogh, the Fauves and later abstraction. He died at 31, leaving only a handful of major canvases plus oil sketches and celebrated conté crayon drawings. For the market this extreme scarcity matters: important paintings almost never come up, and when they do they set landmark prices, as with Les Poseuses, Ensemble (Petite version), sold for $149.2 million at Christie's New York in 2022.
