Georges Braque

1882-1963 · French · Fauvism, Cubism, School of Paris

Biography

Georges Braque (1882-1963) began as a Fauve and, from 1908, developed Cubism side by side with Pablo Picasso, moving from the Analytic phase to papier collé and Synthetic Cubism. After the First World War he refined a quieter, layered language of still lifes, guéridons, studios and birds, and in 1961 he became the first living artist shown at the Louvre. For the market his Cubist works of 1908-1914 are the scarcest and most coveted, but almost all sit in museums. What reaches auction today is mostly later still lifes, works on paper and prints, so his public market is broad but trades well below Picasso's, with few lots above $1 million in recent seasons.
