Biography

Georg Baselitz, born Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, studied in East Berlin before moving to West Berlin, where his 1963 exhibition caused a scandal and the seizure of two paintings. His Heroes of 1965 to 1966 portrayed ragged, wounded figures of post-war Germany. From 1969 he painted his motifs upside down, to free painting from subject matter, a device that became his signature. He also made rough-hewn wooden sculptures and was a leading figure of German Neo-expressionism with Kiefer, Immendorff and Penck. He took Austrian citizenship in 2015 and died on 30 April 2026. His market is solid but not speculative, with the 1960s Heroes and early inverted canvases most in demand.
