Biography
Francis Bacon, born in Dublin to English parents, was largely self-taught and made his name with Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion in 1944. His distorted, screaming figures, popes after Velázquez, caged bodies and portraits of friends such as George Dyer, Isabel Rawsthorne and Lucian Freud express violence, desire and isolation. From the 1960s the triptych became his key format. Bacon is the leading European name of the post-war trophy market: Three Studies of Lucian Freud reached 142.4 million dollars in 2013, and large triptychs and Dyer portraits regularly exceed 50 million. Small portrait heads and studies, which come up more often, sell in the 5 to 20 million dollar range.
