Biography
Fernando Botero (1932 to 2023) was a Colombian painter and sculptor whose rounded, inflated figures made him the best known Latin American artist of his time. Drawing on Renaissance masters and the Baroque churches of Medellín, he painted musicians, families, bullfights and political violence, including the Abu Ghraib series. His monumental bronzes stand in public spaces across the world, and he donated large collections to the Museo Botero in Bogotá and the Museo de Antioquia in Medellín. For the market he is one of the most traded Latin American names, with steady supply of paintings, drawings and bronzes; after his death in 2023 The Musicians reached 5.1 million dollars at Christie's, his auction record.
