Biography
Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was a protégé of Klimt who became one of the most radical draughtsmen of the twentieth century. His angular, psychologically raw self-portraits, nudes and portraits, together with brooding townscapes of Krumau, defined Austrian Expressionism. He died of Spanish flu at 28, after barely a decade of mature work. For the market the split is clear: oil paintings are rare, many are in Vienna's Leopold Museum and Belvedere, and several carry restitution histories, while his watercolours and drawings are more numerous and form a deep, active market from hundreds of thousands to several million dollars. His auction record is Houses with Colourful Laundry (Suburb II), sold for $40.1 million at Sotheby's London in 2011.
