Biography

Édouard Vuillard was a French painter, a leading member of the Nabis and, with Bonnard, the master of Intimism. In the 1890s he painted small, densely patterned interiors in which figures merge with wallpaper, fabrics and furniture, often featuring his mother, a dressmaker, and the circle of the Revue Blanche, including Misia Natanson. He also produced large decorative panels for private patrons and, later, society portraits in a more descriptive style. The market values the Nabi interiors of the 1890s far above later work, and supply of top examples is thin. His record, Misia et Vallotton à Villeneuve (1899), sold for 17.7 million dollars at Christie's New York in November 2017, while most works trade below one million.
