Biography

Edgar Degas was a founding exhibitor of the Impressionist group in Paris, although he preferred to call himself a realist. Trained in the academic tradition and devoted to drawing, he is best known for his dancers, racecourses, cafe scenes and women bathing, often seen from unusual, cropped viewpoints. He worked across oil, pastel, monotype, printmaking and sculpture, and the wax figures found in his studio were cast in bronze after his death. For the market, Degas is one of the deepest Impressionist names: pastels and bronze casts appear regularly in New York and London evening sales, and his auction record belongs to a bronze cast of the Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, sold for 41.6 million dollars in 2022.
