Diego Rivera
1886-1957 · Mexican · Mexican Muralism, Cubism
Biography
Diego Rivera was the best known of the Mexican muralists. After more than a decade in Europe, where he painted accomplished Cubist works in Paris, he returned to Mexico in 1921 and covered public buildings with vast frescoes of Mexican history, labour and indigenous culture. Commissions in the United States followed, including the Detroit Industry murals and the destroyed Rockefeller Center mural. His easel paintings, from Cubist canvases to scenes of Mexican life and portraits, are what reaches the market, and his reputation is closely tied to that of his wife Frida Kahlo. In May 2018 Los rivales (1931), from the Rockefeller collection, sold for 9.8 million dollars at Christie's New York, then a record for Latin American art.
