Biography

Constantin Brâncuși was a Romanian sculptor who settled in Paris in 1904 and became a founder of modern abstract sculpture. Rejecting modelling in favour of direct carving and highly polished bronze, he reduced forms to essential shapes in series such as Bird in Space, Sleeping Muse and the Endless Column. His output was small and much of it is in museums, especially the reconstructed studio at the Centre Pompidou, so major works rarely come to auction. When they do, prices are among the highest for any sculptor: in May 2026 the bronze Danaïde (about 1913) sold for 107.6 million dollars at Christie's New York, a new artist record and the second highest price ever for a sculpture at auction.
