Biography

Camille Pissarro, born on the island of St Thomas in the Danish West Indies, was the only artist to show in all eight Impressionist exhibitions and acted as a mentor to Cézanne, Gauguin and others. He painted rural scenes around Pontoise and Éragny, briefly adopted Seurat's divisionist technique, and in the 1890s produced celebrated series of Paris boulevards and of Rouen and Le Havre. For the market, Pissarro is a reliable Impressionist name with a large body of work, so supply is steady across oils, gouaches and drawings. The urban series command the highest prices: Le Boulevard Montmartre, matinée de printemps set his auction record of 32.1 million dollars in London in 2014.
