Biography

Berthe Morisot was a founding member of the Impressionist group and exhibited in seven of its eight exhibitions, missing only the one held after the birth of her daughter Julie. Trained in Paris and encouraged by Corot, she became close to Édouard Manet, whose brother Eugène she married. Her loose, rapid brushwork and luminous palette were applied to domestic interiors, gardens and portraits of women and children, subjects drawn from the private world she knew. For the market, Morisot has gained weight with the renewed attention to women artists and major museum retrospectives. Her auction record, Après le déjeuner, sold for about 11 million dollars in London in 2013, then a record for a woman artist.
