Biography

Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), born in Livorno, moved to Paris in 1906 and became a central figure of the School of Paris. Influenced by Brancusi, African sculpture and the Italian Renaissance, he developed an instantly recognizable style of elongated faces, almond eyes and simplified volumes in his portraits and in the nudes shown at his scandalous 1917 exhibition. He died at 35, leaving a limited body of work. The reclining nudes are among the most expensive paintings ever sold, led by the $170.4 million record of 2015, while authenticity questions weigh on the rest of the market; Marc Restellini's catalogue raisonné, published in April 2026, is expected to bring more clarity.
