Biography

Alfred Sisley was born in Paris to British parents and kept British nationality all his life, although he lived and worked in France. A fellow student of Monet, Renoir and Bazille, he exhibited at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and remained the most consistently landscape focused member of the group, painting rivers, bridges, floods and snow around Louveciennes, Marly and Moret-sur-Loing. He struggled financially and won wide recognition only after his death. For the market, Sisley is a classic entry point to museum quality Impressionism: oils regularly sell between a few hundred thousand and a few million dollars, and his record, a Louveciennes snow scene, made 9.06 million dollars in 2017.
