Agnes Martin
1912-2004 · American (born in Canada) · Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism
Biography
Agnes Martin, born in Macklin, Saskatchewan, in 1912 and a United States citizen from 1950, painted quiet square canvases of pencil grids and pale bands of colour that bridge Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. After her New York years at Coenties Slip she left painting in 1967, then resumed in New Mexico, where she worked until her death in 2004. Her market rests on the six foot square paintings, with grids of the early 1960s at the top. The auction record is $18.72 million for Grey Stone II (1961), sold at Sotheby's New York on 8 November 2023 from the Emily Fisher Landau collection. Works on paper trade in the low six figures, offering a more accessible entry point.
