André Derain
1880-1954 · French · Fauvism, Return to order
略歴
André Derain was a French painter who, working alongside Matisse at Collioure in the summer of 1905, created some of the founding pictures of Fauvism, with landscapes and harbours built from pure, unmixed colour. His views of London painted in 1906 and 1907 for the dealer Ambroise Vollard are among the key works of the movement. He then moved toward a Cézanne-inspired structure and, after the First World War, a classicising realism that made him one of the most admired painters of the 1920s. The market concentrates almost entirely on the Fauve years. His record, Arbres à Collioure (1905), sold for 16.3 million pounds, about 24.1 million dollars, at Sotheby's London in June 2010, the highest price for a Fauve painting at the time.
