Biografía

Kees van Dongen was a Dutch-born painter who settled in Paris in 1897, lived at the Bateau-Lavoir near Picasso and exhibited with the Fauves in 1905. He was also linked to the German Expressionists of Die Brücke. His intense, sensual portraits of women, with enlarged eyes and violent colour, and his scenes of cabarets and the circus, made him a star of Paris nightlife; between the wars he became the fashionable portraitist of high society. The market prizes the Fauve figures of about 1905 to 1913. His highest dollar result, Jeune Arabe (1910), sold for 13.8 million dollars at Sotheby's New York in 2009, while La Quiétude (1918) reached 10.8 million pounds at Christie's London in October 2023.
