Biografía

Jasper Johns, raised in South Carolina, burst onto the New York scene with his 1958 show at Leo Castelli, where MoMA bought three works. His paintings of flags, targets, numbers and maps, built in waxy encaustic over newspaper collage, turned familiar signs into objects of painting and opened the way to Pop, Minimalism and conceptual art. Later phases include crosshatch abstractions, the Seasons and densely autobiographical works. Still active in Connecticut, he is one of the most expensive living artists. Early paintings from 1954 to 1960 are almost all in museums, which keeps auction supply very thin. His prints, among the most important of the century, form a deep and liquid second market.
