Biografía

Ed Ruscha, born in Omaha in 1937 and based in Los Angeles since 1956, turned words, gas stations, signs and the Hollywood landscape into some of the most recognisable images of postwar American art. His early 1960s paintings were shown at the Ferus Gallery and anchor his reputation, alongside artist books such as Twentysome Gasoline Stations. For the market he is the leading living American painter of his generation: in November 2024 Standard Station, Ten-Cent Western Being Torn in Half (1964) sold for $68.26 million at Christie's New York, about 30 percent above his previous record. Text paintings from the 1980s and 1990s trade regularly in the millions at New York evening sales, which makes his market deep and liquid.
